103 - Dog Pig

Yesterday at Dog Pig Art Cafe, we saw a piece of performance art. Since 'a piece' can also be used to describe an amount of gold or chocolate, it is perhaps the wrong term to describe what we saw. It wasn't a play, since it had no plot. There was some singing, but it wasn't a musical.

In the performance, three women walked round in circles posting notices on a wooden structure, which they retreated into at times. From within their apparently hastily constructed wooden house they sang a song. Throughout their half hour show, they shouted slogans, most of which referred to everyday things.

As they performed, the three women were filmed by about a dozen people, some of whom noisily fetched ladders so that they could see into the wooden house.

While I had no idea what any of this was supposed to mean, and developed a suspicion that the performers were just as much in the dark as I was, I decided that this is the sort of thing that is worth fighting for. These women could say whatever they pleased in the silliest fashion imaginable. They may not have made any specific political statement, but they could have. They may have made me feel a bit bored, but they might have entertained me. This is the freedom that is worth fighting for. I will go back to Dog Pig.
